Living in Kallang is a dream for any athlete moving to Singapore. It is located near the Singapore Sports hub that includes multiple sports facilities, including Olympic sized pools, running tracks, basketball courts, and more.
Within view of many of the residences is the Kallang Basin, a vast waterside that reflects the breathtaking skyline at night - a big draw for many expats in Singapore. Additionally, Kallang is not just about sports. It is closely connected to a number of well-known eateries, most notably the Old Airport Road food centre.
Distance from the CBD
Kallang is situated in the eastern edge of central Singapore. Getting to the city takes about 20 minutes and is easily accessible via MRT. Depending on where you stay, you can easily access the green, blue or yellow lines. This is also a neighbourhood that is particularly popular amongst expats working in and around Suntec City.
Living in Kallang: Morning, day and night
Mornings near Kallang are breezy. If you enjoy a morning jog, living in Kallang will inspire you to put on your jogging shoes before the day breaks. After a satisfying jog, you’ll want to replenish your body. A popular brunch spot is Brawns & Brains, which brews some of the best coffee in Singapore.
During the day, when the sun is too much to deal with, you can try some of the indoor activities like rock-climbing or swimming. If you take the MRT to Stadium, you can access a sports library and Kallang wave mall, which has arcades, eateries, shopping and spas.
A major attraction is the Sports Hub itself as it plays host to sports events, concerts and more. Live close enough and you could be sampling the echoes of international acts. For late night shopping, Singapore’s biggest 24-hour Decathlon store is situated near the Mountbatten MRT station. There is also a 24-hour McDonalds for those who are famished after a day filled with activity.
Shop
Kallang may not be known for its shopping, but it will definitely be sufficient. Some of the more popular shopping spots include Kallang Wave Mall, Leisure Park and recently, Decathlon. Kallang Wave Mall has a fair selection of fashion labels that include H&M, Uniqlo and Cotton On. There’s also plenty of sports and electronic stores and eateries. Groceries are available at the FairPrice Xtra, and you could even score some S$2 buys from Daiso.
Eat
The most notable place to eat near Kallang is the Old Airport Road food centre. Some of its hawkers are famous, and may have been featured in the Michelin guides. A good indicator of culinary excellence is the snaking queues that make each meal even more worthwhile.
For a truly local experience, Kallang is home to one of the most famous Frog Porridge eateries in Singapore. If you can stomach the thought of eating frogs then you’ll find out just how delightful frog porridge can be.

The Singapore Sports Hub is known to be the nation’s most ideal host for international events. Sporting events, musical acts and more are often held here. You’ll always know when something is going on when you take the MRT and it starts to crowd as you near the Stadium MRT station. Most evenings however, are quiet. Taking a walk along the Kallang Basin is a great way to get some exercise and admire the Singaporean skyline.
The downside
While Kallang has plenty of the essentials, it is not exactly a place for shopaholics. The malls are not the most exciting. Expats looking for the exciting city vibe may want to think twice about moving to this serene, sports town.
